Ph.D PhD Studentship in Operations Management / Supply Chain Management

The Centre for Process Excellence and Improvement (CPEI) at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, invites applications from enthusiastic and highly-motivated candidates seeking to commence PhD studies in operations management/ supply chain management in October 2010. Fully-funded research studentships are available for suitable candidates.

Candidates should hold a 1st class honours degree at undergraduate level, and hold or expect to obtain a Masters degree (with distinction) in business/management or other related discipline. Industry experience in operations or supply chain management is desirable. The successful candidate will apply qualitative and/or quantitative methods to examine an empirical issue in operations orsupply chain management . Candidates proposing analytical methods (such as simulation or modelling) should contact the management science research group withinJudge Business School. Studentships will be conducted under the supervision of members of the Operations Management faculty (Dr Jane Davies, Dr Matthias Holweg, Dr Benn Lawson).

Potential Topic Areas

Potential topics could include, but are not limited to:

* Supply chain management: Coordination mechanisms to enhance the performance of supply chains; the evolution of value chain architectures; managing the operations-marketing interface; the financial impact of customer-responsive order fulfilment. * Operations strategy: The link of strategy and operational and financial performance; meeting the challenges of globalisation; assessing the impact of global sourcing and/or offshoring; outsourcing of business processes (BPO). * Managing innovation: The commercialisation of innovations; managing the “fuzzy end” in the product development process; the role of operations and R&D in entrepreneurial ventures. * Process improvement: The application of lean and six sigma methodologies to manufacturing, service and health care operations. * Operations management in process industries: The transfer of best practices from discrete manufacture in process industries; supply chain management in process industries.
