Ph.D Post doc in “Scientific GPU Computing”

at Technical University of Denmark in Denmark

A post doc position in the area of scientific computing, with emphasis on Scientific GPU Computing, is available DTU Informatics from April 1, 2010 with a duration of 1 year and a possible extension to 2 years. The research project is financed by a grant from the Danish Council for Independent Research.

The post doc project is part of the research project \“Desktop Scientific Computing on Consumer Graphics Cards” which is carried out in the Scientific Computing section at the Department of Informatics and Mathematical Modelling (DTU Informatics) at the Technical University of Denmark. The section is responsible for the university’s teaching in high-performance computing and scientific computing, and the research includes regularization methods for inverse problems, algorithms for model-predictive control, higher-order methods for PDEs, appearance modeling, and high-performance scientific computing. We offer a cross-disciplinary research environment with activities in applied mathematics and scientific computing, with access to HPC equipment, and with contacts to both academia and industry.

The purpose of the project is to develop a framework for using GPUs and similar many-core hardware accelerators for desktop scientific computing, in collaboration with several international contacts, and in such a way that the technology from an early stage of the project is useful in science and industry.

Part of this work involves the development of performance models and a performance-prediction/profiler framework that acknowledges the specialized memory architecture on a GPU. The research will be carried out in close collaboration with several application cases, most importantly two PhD projects associated with the GPU-computing project within the areas of dynamical optimization and solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). In addition, the post doc will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a national network between academia and industry, to ensure the interaction between the two parts as well as timely dissemination of the results.

The post doc project will involve:

* Development of performance models for GPU computing. * Development of performance prediction and profiler environment. * Development of computational modules for dynamical optimization, Poisson solvers, and other core computational tasks in scientific computing. * Collaboration and interaction with international research contacts. * Establishment and maintenance of a national network between academia and industry.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a background in computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or scientific computing and a PhD degree (or equivalent), and should demonstrate qualifications in, or experience with, the following:

* Numerical methods for large-scale problems. * Programming for massively parallel architectures. * Programming and performance tuning of GPUs. * Cross-disciplinary research work.

Salary and Terms of Employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

Further Information
Further information may be obtained from Professor Per Christian Hansen, phone: +45 45253097,
