Fellowship PhD fellowships in Natural products based drug discovery

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is pleased to announce that 7 PhD fellowships will be available from 1 July 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are invited for the three-year fellowship from candidates that hold or expect to hold a master's degree in a field relevant to the following projects:

1. NATURAL PRODUCTS RESEARCH
Development of SERCA inhibitors using metabolites of metabolically engineered Physcomitrella patens as starting materials. Main supervisor: MSO Professor Søren Brøgger Christensen, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, phone +45 3533 6253 (email: sbc(at)farma.ku.dk).

2. NATURAL PRODUCTS RESEARCH
Natural product discovery from endophytic fungi based on hyphenated NMR with cryogenic probe detection. Main supervisor: Professor Jerzy W. Jaroszewski, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, phone +45 3533 6372 (email: jj(at)farma.ku.dk).

3. MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY
Molecular pharmacology of GABA transporters: Probing for subtype selectivity using natural products. Main supervisor: Associate Professor Petrine Wellendorph, Department of Medicinal Chemistry (email: pw(at)farma.ku.dk).

4. NATURAL PRODUCTS RESEARCH
Design and synthesis of SERCA inhibitors base don the pharmacophore of thapsigargin. Main supervisor: MSO Professor Søren Brøgger Christensen, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, phone +45 3533 6253 (email: sbc(at)farma.ku.dk).

5. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Accelerated natural product discovery in micro and nano scale. Main supervisor: Professor Steen Honoré Hansen, Department of Pharmaceutics and Analytical Chemistry, phone +45 3533 6256 (email: shh(at)farma.ku.dk).

6. CHEMICAL BIOLOGY
Synthesis and biological evaluation of polyamine toxins as tools for studies of ionotropic glutamate receptors. Main supervisor: Professor Kristian Strømgaard, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, phone +45 3533 6114 (email: krst(at)farma.ku.dk).

7. CHEMICAL BIOLOGY
Characterization of the binding sites and mechanism of the natural products ibogaine: A hallucigenic inhibitor of the serotonin transporter and the NMDA receptor. The PhD fellowships are financed by the The Danish Council for Independent Research, the Danish Council for Strategic Research and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The PhD fellowships are to be completed in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Regulations and Guidelines for the Awarding of the PhD Degree by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The terms of employment are stated in the agreement between The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance.

The PhD fellowships are affiliated to the research training programme, Drug Research Academy.
