Ph.D PhD Scholarship in Ecological Plant Physiology

at University of Halle-Wittenberg in Germany

PhD position available at the Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany (Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences) starting June 2012 or later. The position is available for three years. Salary is according to the German public service 65 % of TV-L E 13.

As part of a project cluster dealing with analysis and modeling of environmental impacts induced by climate change (increased CO2, heat and drought stress), our project focuses on combined measurement and modeling of gas exchange at leaf and canopy scale in winter wheat.
Within the project cluster, we closely collaborate with three groups from other institutes in Germany.

Demands on the candidate:

  • Diploma or Master’s comparable degree in Agriculture, Biology (Plant Physiology), Bioinformatics, Physics, Geo-ecology or other related fields

  • Experiences in experimental plant eco-physiology, related modeling, implementation of models and programming (Matlab preferred)
  • Ability to participate actively in measuring campaigns in the field and to meet the related physical strain
  • Good English skills
  • Driver’s license (passenger car)

Tasks:

  • The research will focus on main tasks of the project „Coupled model of photosynthetic primary production and water houshold at the leaf and canopy scale – integration of the effects of increased CO2, heat- and drought stress for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)“
  • Measurements of gas exchange and related micro-climatic and physiological characteristics at the leaf and canopy scale at the considered conditions (climate chamber, field)
  • Specification of process models of CO2-exchange and water regime (models are established in our group) for wheat, model development to include effects of increased CO2, heat and drought stress
  • Publication of the results of the research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Preparation of a PhD thesis

Halle (Saale) is an attractive city in central Germany (Saxony-Anhalt). Halle and the region are hosting a large number of internationally acknowledged scientific institutes, in particular in the field of basic and applied plant sciences and related fields.

We explicitly encourage qualified female candidates to apply. Disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be considered first.

To apply, please send a motivation letter, CV, certificates and transcript with marks and scores (Abitur/College, Diploma, B.Sc, M.Sc) and two recommendation letters as one PDF-file to johannes.mueller@landw.uni-halle.de. Deadline: 20.05.2012.
