Research Scholarship

Funded by the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG), the ACELG Scholarship is open to commencing Australian domestic or international students who are intending to undertake a PhD in the area of politics, sociology, public administration, leadership or urban planning that is of direct relevance to local government.

Value and Duration

Two candidates will be awarded the scholarship each year. The recipient will be awarded $25,392 annually over 3 years.

There is also the possibility of a top up of $5,000 per annum.


To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must:

  • have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment;
  • be undertaking a higher degree by research at UTS in the year of the scholarship;
  • be enrolled as a full-time student;
  • be undertaking a research project that is of direct relevance to ACELG.

Selection Criteria

  • A research proposal that is of direct relevant to the work of ACELG and of a high academic standard
  • Motivation to succeed in chosen degree
  • Academic merit in previous undergraduate (including Honours) or postgraduate study.
