The Australian Catholic University seeks applications for a three year, fully funded PhD scholarship to work with Professor Bryan Turner, Dr Joshua Roose and Dr Dina Afrianty in the newly established Institute for Religion, Politics and Society, to work within the research stream titled Religion and Law.
The Religion and Law program is concerned with the intersection of law and society and in particular, issues of legal pluralism, development, gender and political contestation. The flagship project run under this stream is SHARIASource, a collaboration with significant international partners. SHARIASource aims to be the world’s largest repository of Islamic legal sources and to inform the development of Islamic law globally.
This research stream is complimented by and interrelated with other programs within the Institute, including Cities and Successful Societies, Asian Religions, Religion and Medicine, and Global Catholicism.

The PhD candidate will undertake research on a comparative project examining public and official attitudes to and the practice of Islamic criminal law and punishment, including blasphemy and morality laws andhadud punishments, in South East Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei).
Based upon this research, the PhD candidate will submit two research articles for publication in journals and a high quality dissertation.

Academic criteria:

  • Bachelor of Arts with Honours (HI or HIIA) or Bachelor of Laws, or a Masters in sociology, political science, law, religious studies or a discipline applicable to the position;
  • Academic excellence, including, but not limited to, academic awards or grants; and
  • Familiarity with the social science literature on the subject of research as well as more broadly with the academic literature on Islamic Law in South East Asia.

Study mode:
Full-time only

The scholarship provides:

  • A tax free stipend of $25,849 (per annum) and a $10,000 per annum top-up for three years, subject to satisfactory progress; and
  • A fee waiver and OSHC policy for International research candidates.

  • Research and leadership potential;
  • Experience in having conducted fieldwork-based research in the context of the broader study;
  • Excellent English (written and spoken) and knowledge of the language(s) relevant to the project;
  • Quantitative skills, particularly in survey design and analysis;
  • Ability to contribute to a team;
  • Ability to meet deadlines; and
  • Ability to contribute to an energetic research environment, to work well with others and to contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute.
